Summer School Polytechnic University of Madrid 2018

The  Polytechnic University of Madrid  presents the first edition of the summer school in Spanish for international students. This school is integrated with other projects such as the DecaTech for English-speaking students. The  objectives  of this school are:

  • Offer quality training in technological fields for Spanish-speaking university students.
  • Promote an interaction between students from different universities introducing Spanish culture.

SUMMER SCHOOL COURSE OUTLINE

The courses last from June 17 to July 15, 2018 , including both training activities and cultural activities that may be carried out together with students from other international programs at the UPM. The training activities will include both external talks and technical visits to companies or other organizations. Classes will be held from Monday to Thursday in four or five hours a day (morning or afternoon session).

  • The minimum number for a course to be taught is 15 students, and the maximum recommended number is 25.

Sustainability of the constructions. LEED and Envision certification

Course objectives  :

The objective of the course is for students to acquire knowledge of the causes that generate significant impacts on the environment in the construction of buildings and infrastructures and to handle the LEED and ENVISION assessment tools for the certification of buildings and civil works developed by the US Green Building Council and the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure.

Agenda :

Module I

Unit 1. Environmental evaluation of constructions.

Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Systems. Law 21/2013. Environmental management tools. LCA methodology. How to improve communication and the environmental value of projects?

Unit 2. Legislation, regulations and state of the art of evaluating the sustainability of constructions.

Introduction. Construction and sustainable development. European Agenda for Sustainable Construction. Normative development of the CEN and ISO groups of sustainable construction.

Module 2

Unit 1. Construction materials and the environment.

Introduction. LCA methodology. ISO 14040, UNE-ISO 15979. Environmental declaration of construction products (DAP), UNE-EN-15804. Methodology and case studies.

Topic 2. Risks, resilience assessment and recovery

Module 3

Topic 1. Tools for evaluating the sustainability of buildings.

LEED certification. Methodology, Study of the phases. Evaluation and scoring criteria. Certification levels.

Unit 2. Study cases

Module 4

Topic 1. Tools for evaluating the sustainability of infrastructures.

ENVISION certification. Methodology, Study of the phases. Evaluation and scoring criteria. Certification levels.

Course objectives  :

  • Know the main insurances that should be considered when carrying out infrastructures or constructions
  • Manage insurance for your underwriting in a civil engineering project. Adequate needs and coverage.
  • Knowing how an insurer or reinsurer analyzes our request for insurance and how we should interact with it for the success of the operation.
  • Make and manage claims against contracted insurance policies. Prepare engineers in the relationships established with experts, companies, etc. for an adequate process of compensation or reparation.
